Jeff Lytle: 'Name-calling' not unique to campaigns
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
So now the presidential campaign has gone from lipstick to middle names. That’s a move I can identify with. When I was growing up, the use of a middle name meant someone was in trouble. But not the speaker, as in Mike Scott’s case. Full story »
Ben Bova: Our new world could be the moon
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
Although the holiday is celebrated tomorrow, today is actually the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ landing in the New World, 516 years ago.
Today we have many new worlds awaiting us, beyond Earth. A couple of weeks ago I talked about living in a space station in orbit. Today, let’s think about what it would be like to live on the closest of the new worlds: our moon. Don’t scoff. Full story »

Guest commentary: Music is fundamental part of well-rounded education
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
Re: Bob Hagen’s letter to the editor published Monday.
As a retired music educator with a 42-year career of dedicated service to both public school and collegiate music students, and the father of three musician daughters, one of whom is currently teaching as a music educator in the Collier County Public School system, I feel compelled to respond to Hagen’s views of the place of music in the school curriculum. Washington Calling: No privatization of Social Security
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
Dead. That’s the fate of any effort in the foreseeable future or so to privatize Social Security. The financial collapse has driven a stake through the heart of that idea, long the darling of Republicans, who have sold the concept as the only way to keep the retirement system viable — particularly in the face of the imminent retirement of millions of baby boomers. Guest commentary: Sister's breast-cancer scare saved my life
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
I know that this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I want all the women who are going through this — or who will possibly go through it — to know that there is light at the end of this not so happy road. Full story »
Guest commentary: Vote yes for Collier students
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
On Nov. 4, Collier County voters will have the opportunity to take positive action to direct how a portion of our education tax dollars is spent by voting “yes’’ for the flexible funding referendum. This referendum allows the school district to move between $15 million and $19 million, depending on assessed property values, from its capital fund directly into its operating fund in each of the next four years. This money would support student programs that are already in place. Full story »
Guest commentary: No time to wait: Everglades restoration must remain a priority
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
With the pending acquisition of U.S. Sugar, Floridians’ hopes of witnessing meaningful Everglades restoration were considerably raised. But a report issued last week by the National Research Council (NRC) reminded us of the many obstacles confronting the ambitious effort to restore the River of Grass. Full story »

Guest commentary: What None of the proposed amendments clear the bar of constitutional issues
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
The Democratic Executive Committee of Collier County (DEC) recommends voters vote no on the six amendments on the ballot. The DEC examined the appropriateness of proposals as constitutional issues compared to normal legislative issues. In each case the amendments fail to achieve the status of constitutional issues. Guest commentary: What Make sure your vote will count
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
If you recently registered to vote or recently updated your voter registration, you may not actually be authorized to vote. Voter registration forms must now be completed perfectly or you aren’t registered. Effective Sept. 8, the name on your voter registration application must agree exactly with the name on your Florida driver’s license, Social Security card or state ID card. Full story »
Guest commentary: What the new president must do about health-care
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
No matter whether Barack Obama or John McCain becomes our next president, one issue that must be addressed early in his administration is health care. Key to the health-care equation are three words: quality, cost and access. These are the three interconnecting goals that the new administration needs to address first. Full story »

Bill Maxwell: Campus assaults too often hushed up
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008
For many major universities, their sports teams, especially their football and basketball teams, give them their proud persona. The teams and their star players are virtually worshipped. But while sports bring schools fame, glamour and money, the value placed on sports often produces scandal and potential scandal, corruption, abuse and a culture of secrecy. Presidents, governing boards, coaches and university-friendly lawyers will go to great lengths to play down scandal, especially sexual assault, and hide it altogether. Full story »
Jeff Lytle: One thing we won’t miss about Hunter
Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
Don Hunter will have a lot to miss when he leaves the Collier County Sheriff’s Office after 20 years at the helm. He has built up quite an agency, bringing it into the 21st century. He probably won’t miss me very much. His relations with our editorial board have had their ups and downs. Full story »
