Guest commentary: Music is fundamental part of well-rounded education

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
Re: Bob Hagen’s letter to the editor published Monday.
As a retired music educator with a 42-year career of dedicated service to both public school and collegiate music students, and the father of three musician daughters, one of whom is currently teaching as a music educator in the Collier County Public School system, I feel compelled to respond to Hagen’s views of the place of music in the school curriculum. Guest commentary: Vote yes for Collier students

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
On Nov. 4, Collier County voters will have the opportunity to take positive action to direct how a portion of our education tax dollars is spent by voting “yes’’ for the flexible funding referendum. This referendum allows the school district to move between $15 million and $19 million, depending on assessed property values, from its capital fund directly into its operating fund in each of the next four years. This money would support student programs that are already in place. Full story »

Guest commentary: No time to wait: Everglades restoration must remain a priority

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
With the pending acquisition of U.S. Sugar, Floridians’ hopes of witnessing meaningful Everglades restoration were considerably raised. But a report issued last week by the National Research Council (NRC) reminded us of the many obstacles confronting the ambitious effort to restore the River of Grass. Full story »

Guest commentary: What None of the proposed amendments clear the bar of constitutional issues

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
The Democratic Executive Committee of Collier County (DEC) recommends voters vote no on the six amendments on the ballot. The DEC examined the appropriateness of proposals as constitutional issues compared to normal legislative issues. In each case the amendments fail to achieve the status of constitutional issues. Guest commentary: What Make sure your vote will count

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
If you recently registered to vote or recently updated your voter registration, you may not actually be authorized to vote. Voter registration forms must now be completed perfectly or you aren’t registered. Effective Sept. 8, the name on your voter registration application must agree exactly with the name on your Florida driver’s license, Social Security card or state ID card. Full story »

Guest commentary: What the new president must do about health-care

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
No matter whether Barack Obama or John McCain becomes our next president, one issue that must be addressed early in his administration is health care. Key to the health-care equation are three words: quality, cost and access. These are the three interconnecting goals that the new administration needs to address first. Full story »

Guest commentary: Sustainable Collier is leading the way to a better future for us all

Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
Smart business leaders are always looking for ways to reduce the cost of doing business. Guest commentary: Palin’s candidacy presents the feminist dilemma

Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
I taught U.S. women’s history in the late 1960s and 1970s at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. In one class session, I showed a slide of a woman wearing an apron that said: “I Hate Housework.” The students invariably laughed and clapped. When the room became quiet, I noted that the sentiment expressed in the image was problematic, not as simple as the message suggested. After all, many women chose to become wives and mothers and stayed home to raise their families. Full story »

Guest commentary: TV ads are part of Avow’s outreach

Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
The recent guest commentary on Avow Hospice’s advertising campaign reveals several public misconceptions about hospice care in general and Avow in particular. Please allow me to set the record straight so that those who need our services will call us to get the help they need.
The commentary assumes there is no competition in Collier County among end-of-life care providers, and that doctors automatically send their patients to hospices when cure is no longer possible. How we wish this simple scenario were true! Full story »

Guest commentary: JA teaches lessons in business

Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
The current presidential election has brought a renewed emphasis on the next generation, including the opportunities for today’s leaders to make a positive impact on their future. I’m pleased to report that a lasting difference is being made by our community business leaders through Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida. Full story »

Guest commentary: Towed truck incident was handled professionally

Friday, Oct. 3, 2008
In response to Daily News Editorial Page Editor Jeff Lytle’s recent columns, it is important that the public be made aware of our findings about what occurred on Sept. 3 when a Collier County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was towed from a local condominium parking area. The facts of this case are far more straightforward than what Lytle’s provocative conjecture would lead the reader to believe. Full story »

Guest commentary: Changing how we design suburbs can bolster national security

Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008
I remember playing, biking and walking on busy highways in Holland as a child. It was 1973 and Holland had adapted to the oil crisis by prohibiting driving on the weekends and rationing gas. From October 1973 through March 1974, OPEC cut off oil to the United States and Holland and limited it for countries seen as supporting Israel during the Yom Kippur War. Full story »

Guest commentary: Hospice donations misspent on media

Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008
One is always reluctant to question charitable organizations whose purpose is to do good for people and communities; hence, I am reluctant to write this letter. Yet, the media blitz of AVOW Hospice of Naples causes me to wonder what all the advertising is about and, in fact, raises my ire when I know that well-meaning people have channeled untold sums to this hospice, often as memorials in lieu of flowers when a loved one has passed. Guest commentary: A safe haven of hope where women and children can heal and grow

Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008
In these difficult times of scarcity and struggle, we sometimes lose a hand or two in this challenging yet exciting game of life. Some of us are lucky enough to have a hidden wisdom card or two to help us scrape by and even come out, even from a risky situation. Full story »

Guest commentary: Amendment 2 only protects something precious

Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008
The recent guest commentary by the Rev. Rick Sosbe, pastor of the Celebration Metropolitan Community Church of Naples, finding discrimination in Amendment 2, deserves a response. Most amendments propose something new. Not so with Amendment 2. It simply protects something that has been dear and precious to us for over 2,000 years: the union of man and woman in marriage. Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
