Editorial: Election 2008 - Collier Fire Boards

Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008
There are plenty of races — all nonpartisan — on the ballot in Collier and Lee counties for fire control districts. Though their campaigns are low-budget and voters don’t get to hear much from them, these candidates aim to shape important public policy and spend your tax dollars. Full story »

Editorial: At no taxpayer expense, this flexibility necessary

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
This is a message that bears repeating again and again. We will make it here only twice — in the next sentence and at the end of this editorial.
Regardless of what voters may think of today’s Collier County School Board or its administration, it is important to approve the school funding referendum. The schools need the money. Full story »

Editorial: Paterno has the acumen, experience board needs

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
There is a single contest left for the Collier County School Board this year. With District 2’s Kathleen Curatolo re-elected and fellow incumbent Linda Abbott ousted in the August primary, countywide voters have a distinct choice between two quality finalists from District 4. One, Joe Paterno, brings a business-leadership and job-training background. The other, Julie Sprague, brings credentials as a 30-year health and physical education teacher. Full story »

Editorial: Award suits Mayor Nelson

Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008
One more hurrah for Ben Nelson, the mayor of Bonita Springs, who won this year’s Bonita Springs Citizen of the Year award. The award sponsors — the News-Press, the Bonita Banner and the Daily News — recognize what Bonita voters knew by naming Nelson mayor after serving eight years as a council member. Full story »

Editorial: Board candidates provide varied, valuable strengths

Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008
Voters of all political persuasions — Republicans, Democrats, independents and others — have the opportunity to elect six members of the Lee Memorial Health System Board of Directors in the general election on Nov. 4, for which early voting starts on Oct. 20. The board, although it does not have power to tax, sets policy for the system’s hospitals — all of Lee County’s except Lehigh Regional Medical Center — and care centers. Full story »

Editorial: A fitting honor for ‘Mother’

Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008
This is a story for the ages. It speaks to the kind of woman Anna Mae Perry was and what kind of area Collier County used to be. Her midwifery and humanitarian spirit was so strong, and Collier was so small, everybody knew her and called her “Mother.” Full story »

Editorial: Lee County Sheriff

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008
Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott attracts national attention for his comments at a rally for vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, a fellow Republican, at Germain Arena Monday. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008

Editorial: Show us how economic rescue plan works

Monday, Oct. 6, 2008
It shows how little most of us know about how money works. It shows how delicately the parts of our local, statewide, national and even global economies are connected. It shows we have a crisis of confidence — and how badly American needs some leadership right now. The “it” is the economy at all levels and how it is responding to the $700 billion rescue plan approved by Congress only a few days ago. Full story »

Editorial: Incumbents best choices in Florida Legislature elections

Monday, Oct. 6, 2008
Major races for the Florida Legislature were settled without contests. Garret Richter of Naples succeeds Burt Saunders of Naples to represent the Collier-Lee District 25 seat in the Senate. Tom Grady ran unopposed to succeed Richter in Naples-based House District 76. That leaves these races for legislative seats from Collier County. Full story »

Editorial: Election 2008: Mosquito Control Boards

Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008
Collier and Lee counties are fortunate to have dedicated, qualified candidates for an important public service — mosquito control.
They work out of the limelight. We know they’re doing well when we don’t think about mosquitoes — or the officials elected to keep bugs at bay.
Three incumbents on the Nov. 4 ballot, for which early voting starts Oct. 20, merit re-election. Full story »
