Michael Peltier: Election folks prepping for the big day
Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008
Jennifer Edwards may have lost her voice last week, but the Collier County Supervisor of Elections did not lose her focus. With a little over three weeks to go until Election Day, Edwards said in a crackling voice that her office and those of colleagues around the state are ready for what could be a record turnout of voters spurred by economic conditions and a highly visible presidential race. Jay Ambrose: The Biden gaffes
Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008
During all the hysteria about Sarah Palin and whether or not she is fit to be vice president, has anyone noticed that Joe Biden is a persistent, unreformed, downright clownish bungler whose gaffes are simply too many and too wild to be considered perfectly excusable slips of the tongue? Full story »
Jeff Lytle: 'Name-calling' not unique to campaigns
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
So now the presidential campaign has gone from lipstick to middle names. That’s a move I can identify with. When I was growing up, the use of a middle name meant someone was in trouble. But not the speaker, as in Mike Scott’s case. Full story »
Ben Bova: Our new world could be the moon
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
Although the holiday is celebrated tomorrow, today is actually the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ landing in the New World, 516 years ago.
Today we have many new worlds awaiting us, beyond Earth. A couple of weeks ago I talked about living in a space station in orbit. Today, let’s think about what it would be like to live on the closest of the new worlds: our moon. Don’t scoff. Full story »

Brent Batten: Peering into Sen. Saunders' connection with a pyramid
Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008
Is the online travel company for which Burt Saunders serves as a director a pyramid scheme? The Attorney General of California says it is.
Saunders, an attorney, a state senator and a candidate for Congress, says it’s not. Attorneys can argue the fine distinctions between a legitimate multilevel marketing business and a pyramid for billable hour upon billable hour. In fact, Saunders says, that’s go Full story »

Don Farmer: Let’s evacuate the Capitol
Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008
The way to clean up the mess known as the U.S. Congress is to enact term limits, as I recently suggested in this space. Some readers apparently agree. This would replace career politicians who spend most of their time making sure they get re-elected. Term limits would preserve Congress for those who want to serve, then leave, rather than hanging on forever. Full story »
Brent Batten: Biden fans the flames in SW Florida
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008
When the political scientists write the history of the 2008 election they’ll look at the week of Oct. 7 as the point at which the heat was turned up. And Southwest Florida, where crowds endured broiling waits to take part, will fit right into the story. Full story »
Dan K. Thomasson: FBI gets open license to snoop on citizens
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008
This is a cautionary tale. In 1947, Gen. William “Wild Bill” Donovan proposed a new agency for gathering intelligence to replace the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) that he had headed so successfully in helping win World War II. The legendary spymaster would have been the logical choice to lead an effort that would be at the forefront of the fight against communism throughout the Cold War. Full story »
Brent Batten: Sarahmania sweeps through (and outside) Germain Arena
Monday, Oct. 6, 2008
Southwest Florida hasn’t seen anything like this since... I’m not sure Southwest Florida has ever seen anything like this. Sarahmania rolled over the region Monday like a avalanche down Mount McKinley. Full story »
Michael Peltier: Florida appears key state again for president
Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008
Yikes, what a difference a month makes. Written off by the parties as a “gimme” state for GOP presidential candidate John McCain, Florida has yet again become an important player in what may be a tight race for the state’s 27 electoral votes. Full story »
Jeff Lytle: One thing we won’t miss about Hunter
Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
Don Hunter will have a lot to miss when he leaves the Collier County Sheriff’s Office after 20 years at the helm. He has built up quite an agency, bringing it into the 21st century. He probably won’t miss me very much. His relations with our editorial board have had their ups and downs. Full story »

Phil Lewis: Keeping watch with 'preventive journalism'
Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
Newspapers and magazines across the nation are cutting expenses to cope with a waning economy and a drop in advertising revenue, a trend that worries those who feel a healthy, free press is vital to American democracy. Full story »
Ben Bova: Politics have never meshed with technology
Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008
Saturday marked the 51st anniversary of the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I. On that historic date I was living in the Baltimore area, working for the Glenn L. Martin Co. on the Vanguard project, which we all thought would produce the first artificial satellite. The fact that it didn’t taught me a lesson about how politics interacts with science and technology. It’s a lesson that most of our politicians have yet to learn. Full story »
Don Farmer: Financial mess proves it’s time to rein in Congress
Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008
If you are disgusted with American politicians in general and the Congress in particular, raise your hand. Wait, wait, put down those torches and pitchforks. A simple show of hands will do. The bumbling and dithering in Washington over the nation’s deadly serious financial crisis is appalling. But what else is new? Full story »

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
