Florida citrus acreage down to lowest number since 1966

Call it the citrus squeeze. Statewide, citrus acreage is down 11 percent from two years ago. It’s at 576,577 acres — the lowest number since record-keeping began in 1966 with the first tree inventory. Southwest Florida has lost 11,277 acres of citrus since 2006. In that time, more than 2 million trees have disappeared, according to the most recent tree census by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Full story »
