GATEWAY MURDER BLOG: Defense rests; final arguments begin Tuesday

The murder trial of Fred Cooper in the Gateway case continued this morning in Lee County Circuit Court. Prosecutors have concluded their case and the defense is now presenting its side. Fred Cooper took the stand in his own defense shortly after 10 a.m. He described his relationship with Kellie Ballew as "rocky." He also said he had met Steven and Michelle Andrews on several occasions at functions with Ballew's job at Outside Productions in Bonita Springs. He said the couples even sat together at the same table for a company Christmas party. Cooper also testified he had sex with Michelle Andrews. Full story »

Naples police have identified the man who was shot and killed Sunday night as Jacques Lamothe, 63, who lived in the Gordon River Apartments. The name of the second man who was shot and hospitalized is not being released for his safety, said Naples Det. Randy Durniak. Police are following numerous leads, Durniak said, but the identity of the shooter remains a mystery. Full story »

Friends question dropped charges in murder case

The couple met at St. Matthew’s House, at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. But within 2 1/2 years, he would be dead and she’d be charged with his murder. Tommy Chapman Jr., 27, a waiter at Roy’s restaurant at Bayfront, was found barely alive on June 19, lying in a pool of blood in his rental home at 1263 Barbizon Lane in East Naples, where bloody footprints led to his bedroom. Collier County Sheriff’s investigators said the house was filled with blood, and a door appeared as if it were painted red. Full story »
