Ave Maria University starts work on new dorm
Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008
Ave Maria University broke ground on its fifth dormitory at a ceremony Tuesday morning.
The dorm, nicknamed the “mega-dorm,” will hold more than 550 students when it’s completed next August.
University officials who spoke at the groundbreaking said the dorm was needed to accommodate student growth.
“This is a testament to our confidence in the mission and our place here in Collier County,” University President Nick Healy said.
University founder and chancellor Tom Monaghan said the dorm would give the school additional capacity in the short term and allow Ave Maria to house younger students attending programs for high school, youth groups and homeschooling.
“We want to keep ahead of the game,” Monaghan said.
There are 601 undergraduates, including 326 new students, enrolled at Ave Maria this semester, according to statistics released Tuesday by the university. System-wide, including Ave Maria’s campus in Nicaragua, on-campus graduate program and graduate distance learning program, there are 1,216 students. The Haskell Co., a Jacksonville-based firm, will construct the building.
