I tell clients that there are 2,500 commonly available plants in Florida, so the work is to find exactly the one you want for your garden spot.
But how do you even begin to limit the choices? You obviously cannot go through all of these species, one by one, until you find just the right plant. Full story »

Treasures in the Attic: Pressed-glass pattern has lots of imitators
Friday, Oct. 10, 2008
DEAR HELAINE AND JOE: I am interested in knowing about the designer of these “Three Face” pieces and learning when they were made. There are no markings, but we know the open compote was given to my great-grandparents as a wedding gift in 1884. The rest of the pieces were obtained by my mother over the years at various antiques shops and garage sales. Full story »

Daughter ran up major bills in mom’s name — but who pays?
Friday, Oct. 10, 2008
DEAR BRUCE: I am a savvy woman who has been taken advantage of by my adult daughter. She used my name and Social Security number to apply for a credit card. She ran the card up by a substantial amount, but, of course, didn’t have the money to pay it off. Is my credit ruined because of this? Full story »

Q: I need to call someone to clean my air conditioner and whatever else is included. Who or what type of service company performs this job? Also, what should I be having done to my unit and/or inside ducts and furnace? I want to make sure there is no mold or anything when this has been performed.

Interiors: Get a ‘blind’ eye and add some elegance

Covering windows with blinds is not a new concept by any means. And if you think you know when they originated, you might be off by a few hundred years. We remember blinds being popular in the ’30s and ’40s when they were called Venetian blinds with two-inch, wooden, painted slats that were hard to clean. After that, there was a wave of popularity with blinds of the mini variety in the ’80s. These were aluminum, baked-enamel painted, one-inch slats.

Smart Money: Does kids’ concern about Florida lot rental have other motives?
Friday, Oct. 3, 2008
DEAR BRUCE: I own a modular home in a park in central Florida, where we pay rent on the lot. The park is well maintained, and it is restrictive in what we can and cannot do with our homes. Because of this, it always looks nice and the value is greater than in other parks.
However, the lot rent increases 6 percent annually, which my son believes is outrageous. The park owners insist it is necessary, owing to rising costs of all services. The park is roughly 11 years old, so the original owners now pay almost double the lot rent they started with, not that there are many original residents left, of course. Do you believe such an increase is reasonable? Full story »
