The Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer team fell to Jacksonville University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the Ashley Sports Complex.
The Eagles (7-3-2, 2-1-2) allowed their first goal in five halves, and had their two-game winning streak come to an end. The Dolphins (6-7-1, 3-3) even their A-Sun record.
“We created some good opportunities,” Eagles head coach Jim Blankenship said. “We played well enough to win but they had some great saves to keep us out of the net.”
The game-winning goal came by the Dolphins in the 12th minute. Dolphins midfielder Emme Graham took a shot from five-yards out that found the bottom left corner of the net after passes from senior forward Keri Zwikker and freshman forward Jessica Hurtado.
In the second half, freshman goalie Stephanie Powers, who had five saves, laid out to knock down a penalty kick from Zwikker with seven minutes remaining to keep the Eagles within reach.
Freshman midfielder Olivia Elias provided the Eagles’ best chance to score with three minutes remaining as she launched a shot over the head of Rooney, but the shot hit the crossbar and bounced to a JU defender.
The Eagles play Lipscomb at the FGCU Soccer Complex on Friday at 7 p.m.
