Collier County's Parks and Recreation department has announced that the North Collier Regional Park will host Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente from Nov. 8 through Dec. 27.
The county notes that: "For many baseball fans, Roberto Clemente is remembered as the greatest Latin American ballplayer to ever step onto the diamond. A right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1972, Clemente earned 12 Gold Gloves, appeared in numerous All-Star games and won four National League batting titles.
"Clemente was named as the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1966. On the field, he had fire, intensity, and a cannon arm that gave every ticket holder in the park an unforgettable show of true athleticism.
"Off the field, Roberto Clemente is remembered as a selfless humanitarian. “Any time you have the opportunity to make a difference in this world, and you don’t do it,” he asserted, “you are wasting your time on this earth.” In 1972, Clemente died in a plane crash while delivering relief supplies to earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua."
In recognition of his multiple contributions, SITES, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, and the Clemente family are proudly presenting a bi-lingual exhibition called Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente. The exhibit is richly illustrated with images of Clemente’s life and accomplishments. The exhibit first showed at the Louisville Slugger Museum in 2007.
Collier County Parks and Recreation is organizing other events as a tribute to Roberto Clemente including a baseball card collector’s clinic and “Memories from the Dugout,” a lecture series about Southwest Florida baseball.
An interactive website featuring teachers’ lesson plans, biographical highlights, historic photographs, game footage, and baseball trivia for the Roberto Clemente Exhibit is available online at www.robertoclemente.si.edu.
